Charlie Peters set for 8 man featherweight tournament

ONE Championship have just announced they will be hosting an eight man featherweight tournament featuring some of the best fighters in kickboxing and Muay Thai. The list is staggering with names such as two time K1 Max champion Giorgio Petrosyan and Yodsanklai Fairtex. Indeed this tournament is very reminiscent of the K1 Max, this being the first tournament since to have collected such a prestigious list of combatants. The full list of fighters is:

Yodsanklai Fairtex

The eight time world Muay Thai champion is widely regarded as being perhaps the best Thai boxer at 70Kg on the planets and has so fair dismantled his opponents with ease. Often show casing the masses of power in his left round kick.

Giorgio Petrosyan

The Doctor also holds a strong position as being regarded as perhaps the greatest pound for pound kickboxer active today. So far Petrosyan has run through both of his opponents (including fellow tournament participant Jo Nattawut)

Andy Souwer

Souwer is also a two time K1 Max world champion (as well as coming runner up a further two times). Souwer also lost to Dzhabar Askerov back in 2013 on a split decision so this could be his opportunity to right that.

Samy Sana

This Frenchman although may not carry the star power of the previous 3 entrants but it none the less an excellent fighter. Sana has already beaten Armen Petrosyan (brother of Giorgio). Could he potentially upset both of the pair?

Dzhabar Askerov

The Russian seven time world Champion has fought primarily in China and Russia the past few years whilst training out of Thailand. As well as kickboxing, Askerov also has a professional boxing record of 1-0 and a professional MMA record of 8-0.

Jo Nattawut

The 26 year old Thai got off to a rough start in ONE Championship after being picked apart in his bout with Giorgio Petrosyan. However, Nattawut came back with a vengeance beating George Mann (giving him a haematoma in the process) showing he is not to be taken lightly.

Petchmorrakot Petchyindee Academy

This former super lightweight Lumpinee Stadium introduced himself to the UK by finishing Liam Harrison in the second round of their recent bout. Harrison stepping in for an injured Peters but ultimately getting finished (the first KO loss on his record). With both Peters and Petchmorrakot holding wins over Harrison who is the better out the two?

Charlie “Boy” Peters

Finally representing the UK is Charlie Peters. Peters signed with ONE Championship soon after beating Harrison for the UK number one spot. His scheduled bout with Petchmorrakot did not take place due to a back injry which forced Peters out. He will certainly be looking to make a statement in this tournament.

This is perhaps one of the most exciting tournaments of it kind in recent memory. Not since the days of the K1 Max and K1 Grand Prix has such an assembly of top world class fighters been achieved. It will be fascinating to see the tournament draws, the favorites will almost certainly be Yodsanklai and Petrosyan. However in a tournament such as this, one upset or injury can change the landscape in an instant.
