After Capitan Petchyindee Academy defeated Alaverdi Ramazanov to win the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World title last month, he became the eighth fighter from Thailand to win a ONE World championship.
Seven other compatriots have lifted the ultimate prize in their respective weight divisions over ONE Championship’s history. The first Thailand native to earn a ONE Championship World title wasn’t under Muay Thai or Kickboxing rules however, but in MMA.
Founded in 2011, ONE Championship was originally an MMA exclusive promotion. Thailand’s Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke became the country’s first ever ONE World champion when he defeated Roy Doliguez to win the inaugural ONE Strawweight MMA World title in May 2015.
It wasn’t until 2018 when ONE Championship launched the Super Series banner which would include Muay Thai and Kickboxing bouts. Sam-A Gaiyanghadao would take on Joseph Lasiri in the very first ONE Super Series Muay Thai bout back on the 26th January 2018. He would then go on to defeat Sergio Wielzen to win the inaugural ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World title on 18th May 2018.
One month prior, Nong-O Gaiyanghadao had impressed in his ONE Super Series Muay Thai debut against Fabio Pinca, and would go on to win the inaugural ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World title against Han Zi Hao in February 2019.
A week later, Stamp Fairtex would defeat Janet Todd for the Atomweight Muay Thai World title to become ONE Championship’s first two-sport World champion, having already defeated Kai Ting Chuang to win the ONE Atomweight Kickboxing World title in October 2018.
Petchdam Petchyindee Academy would become Thailand’s next ONE World champion after a technical decision in his Flyweight Kickboxing championship bout against Elias Mahmoudi in May 2019.
Later in 2019, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, who remains unbeaten in ONE Championship, would go on to defeat ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World champion Jonathan Haggerty.
In February 2020, Petchmorakot Petchyindee Academy would defeat fellow Thai Pongsiri P.K.Saenchaimuaythaigym to win the inaugural ONE Featherweight Muay Thai World championship.
He has since gone on to defend the title successfully against Yodsanklai Fairtex and Magnus Andersson.
And finally, after his record-breaking 6-second knockout Kickboxing debut back in Septeber 2020, Capitan Petchyindee Academy would get his opportunity at ONE gold when he faced Alaverdi Ramazanov.
The Thai looked in control throughout the contest and took a second-round stoppage win to earn the ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World title and become Thailand’s eighth ONE Championship World champion.
