The opening ceremony for the 2019 IFMA Senior World Championships took place earlier today followed by the draw for the first round of matches where athletes from over 100 countries take part.
The WBC European champion Dani Fall has been drawn against China’s Nga Thi Lai in the Female -51kg Competitive Class in the first round of the Championships on Tuesday 23rd.
The winner will advance to the semi-finals taking place next Saturday 27th to face the winner of Thailand’s Alisa Yoohanngho and Finland’s Sanni Nurminen who also compete this coming Tuesday.
In the Male -63.5kg Competitive Class, young Scottish star David Sinclair has been drawn against Uzbekistan’s Jasurbek Khaliljonov in the first round taking place on Wednesday.
A win in the first round of a category with 21 competitors will see David move to the next round where he will face either UAE’s Omair Alhosani or Indonesia’ Ardiansyah on Thursday 25th.
Last year’s World Championship Bronze medalist, Leigh Newton, kicks-off her 2019 campaign in the Female -48kg Elite category against 19-year-old Moroccan Belouarrat Oumaima on Wednesday 24th.
A win would see Leigh advance to the quarter-finals on Thursday 25th where she will face either Italy’ Rachele Tidei or Australia’s Sze Sze Rowlinson.
Last years B-Class -81kg Bronze medalist Michael Bradbury steps up to compete in the Elite category at this years Championships. He will face Kazakhstan’s Yevgeniy Zimin in the first round on Tuesday 23rd.
In a category of 26 competitors, Bradbury will need to get through four bouts over four days to make the finals scheduled on Saturday 27th.
