One of the biggest Muay Thai match-ups in the 154lbs division goes down this weekend. Daniel Rodriguez faces Thananchai Sitsongpeenong in the opening round of the RWS Super-Welterweight tournament.
Rodriguez, who is 42-1 in his Muay Thai career, was the 2022 RWS Super-Welterweight tournament winner.
He beat former divisional kingpin, Yodwicha, twice in that tournament—once in the group stage and again in the final to claim the RWS Muay Thai title.
Then, after three-straight wins in the group stage in 2023 – one of which included a victory of Thananchai Sitsongeenong – Daniel Rodriguez suffered his first-ever loss in a trilogy bout against Yodwicha in the semi-final.
Coincidentally, Thananchai Sitsongpeenong, who qualified from the group stage in 2nd place, went on to defeat Petchmorakot in the semi-final and later beat Yodwicha to claim the tournament title in 2023.
Daniel Rodriguez vs Thananchai: An epic rematch between tournament champions
Now, 2022 champion Daniel Rodriguez and 2023 champion Thananchai Sitsongpeenong will meet again—this time in the opening round of the 2024 RWS Super-Welterweight tournament.
A win for either fighter would see them take a lead and strong favourites to win the group. But a loss doesn’t mean they’re out—as was proven in their group stage bout last year.
